In August, the book club for readers in their 20s and 30s will discuss Evicted by Matthew Desmond. This winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction depicts the plight of American families in peril. They lack opportunity for employment that pays a living wage, spend more than half of their income on housing, are at the mercy of unscrupulous landlords who bypass due process in dealing with those who have fallen behind on rent, and face an unforgiving system for regaining the security of a decent dwelling. Amidst the brilliant but bleak reportage, the author offers ideas for solutions based on a new understanding of the cycle of poverty and homelessness.
The book club will meet at Balanced Rock Winery, 1065 Walnut St., Baraboo.
